Seahorses

Some creatures seem to move as though the water itself is carrying them.

Seahorses drifts gently through flowing piano textures, where soft melodies shimmer above a fluid underwater resonance.

The music moves with a quiet, graceful motion, evoking slow ripples, filtered sunlight and the tiny movements of life beneath the surface. Delicate and dreamlike, it invites the listener into a world where everything seems to move a little more slowly.

Seahorses took a little experimentation before it found its natural home. I tried writing it in several different keys, including A minor and B minor, but somehow neither quite sounded right. When I played it in E minor, everything seemed to fall into place.

I don’t have perfect pitch, so I can’t really explain why E minor felt so right. It simply had the colour and character I was looking for. The higher register, light textures and gentle movement all seemed to sit naturally there, creating the soft, underwater quality I wanted from the piece.

The piece is deliberately restrained, with the music flowing rather than pressing forward. I wanted the sound to shimmer and breathe, with the melody floating gently above the harmony and the dynamics blooming gradually before dissolving again.
