Sometimes a familiar melody leads somewhere new.
Moonlight Moments is my own tribute to Beethoven’s iconic Moonlight Sonata, a piece whose atmosphere has inspired me for many years.
I wanted to take something recognisable and let it become something different – retaining the reflective character of the original while allowing the music to find its own voice.

Moonlight Sonata has always been one of my favourite pieces to play, and for a long time I wondered what it might feel like to write something that nodded to the original while finding its own voice.
Although I love Beethoven’s choice of C-sharp minor, my experience as a piano teacher made me aware that it places the original beyond the reach of many players. Writing Moonlight Moments in A minor allowed me to capture a similar atmosphere while making it more approachable, even though it remains one of the more technically demanding pieces in The English Garden Collection.
Listeners familiar with the original will recognise more than just a passing influence. The opening pays an obvious tribute, the ending offers another unmistakable reference, and quieter echoes of the famous theme appear throughout the middle of the piece.
Rather than copying Beethoven’s music, I wanted to celebrate it while allowing Moonlight Moments to become recognisably my own.
