English Rose was inspired by To a Wild Rose by Edward MacDowell, a piece I have fond memories of playing when I was young.
When I came to write The English Garden Collection, it felt natural to include a rose – and to return to a piece that had stayed with me over the years.

My intention from the beginning was to create my own version of the piece I remembered so fondly, rather than simply recreate the original.
MacDowell’s To a Wild Rose is written in A major, but I deliberately allowed English Rose to move between different tonalities, letting the music take its own path.
The result is a piece that carries something of the character of the original, while becoming distinctly my own.
