Dappled Shade

Where sunlight dances through the leaves.

Dappled Shade captures the constantly changing patterns of light and shadow beneath the trees.

The music moves freely between contrasting harmonies, creating a sense of movement and unpredictability as the light shifts across the garden.

I don’t remember a particular story behind writing Dappled Shade, but the music itself seems to have had a mind of its own.

The piece moves through a surprisingly varied harmonic landscape, with frequent changes that give it an unusual, almost unpredictable character. Rather than trying to make the harmonies behave conventionally, I allowed them to twist and turn wherever they wanted to go.

The opening idea eventually returns, bringing us back to familiar ground after the music has wandered through its changing patches of light and shadow.
